Italian philosopher Ordine wins prestigious Spanish award MADRID (AP) — Italian author and philosopher Nuccio Ordine has won Spain’s Princess of Asturias award for communication and humanities for 2023.Prize organizers said Thursday that Ordine, who teaches literature at Calabria University, was chosen for “his defense of the humanities and his commitment to education and the values rooted in the most universal of European thought.”Ordine, 64, is recognized as one of the world’s leading experts on Italian Renaissance studies and a specialist in the work of 16th century Italian philosopher Giordano Bruno.The award organizers said Ordine “advocates instilling in students the pleasure of knowledge and the curiosity to know things.”An honorary doctor and honorary member of numerous universities and cultural institutes, Ordine has written many academic books, most notably “Giordano Bruno and the Philosophy of the Ass” in 1987. Mayor Lightfoot to hold community meeting to address plans for asylum seekers CHICAGO — A community meeting is set Thursday to address plans to deal with the influx of migrants in Chicago.The new shelter could be housed in the old, vacant South Shore High School building. Mayor Lori Lightfoot will be joined with Alderperson Michelle Harris and other city officials at the high school's auditorium.The building has been vacant since 2014, until the Chicago police made it a training academy. It's a move that has happened in other parts of the city, like Lawndale where migrants were moved into Wadsworth Elementary. Englewood Save-A-Lot faces more push-back during town hall meeting Lightfoot said 8,000 migrants have already been bused here from Texas since August.The meeting is set for 6 p.m. Thursday. Chicagoans had to register to attend and the meeting is already at full capacity. Residents are expected to protest outside the meeting.

Some senators warn bill to save Fairfield Lake State Park could lead to litigation AUSTIN (KXAN) — Some state senators are raising concerns that a bill intended to save a state park from permanent closure and development could open Texas up to possible litigation.The House approved House Bill 4757 last month in an attempt to stop development on the land currently occupied by Fairfield Lake State Park.The park, about 70 miles east of Waco, closed to the public at end of February after almost 50 years in operation. It has since temporarily reopened but is slated for permanent closure later this summer.The land in question is not owned by the state, but is instead leased from Vistra Energy, which formerly operated a power plant near the park. St. Louis prosecutor killed in south county crash ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. - A deadly crash on Interstate 270 in south county is hitting close to home for the St. Louis Circuit Attorney's Office. The Missouri Highway Patrol confirmed that the person killed in the crash is 32-year-old James Heitman. It's understood that Heitman was one of the remaining prosecutors in Kim Gardner's office under the General Felonies Unit.Traffic is flowing smoothly now, but it was a much different scene for hours Wednesday afternoon into the night.The crash happened on southbound I-270 south of Tesson Ferry at 5:15 p.m. The Missouri Highway Patrol said four vehicles were involved in a chain reaction wreck as traffic was stopped on the interstate.
