By Emily Weinstein, The New York TimesEveryone has comfort food. Here’s mine: juicy meatballs done Italian American style, served with homemade tomato sauce or piled on top of a spaghetti heap.I used to make a pot of meatballs when friends came over for dinner because it was cozy but not frumpy and everyone loved it. It was also very easy. I’d usually skip the pasta — one less thing to maneuver in my slight strip of a kitchen — and put out good bread instead to dunk in that tomato sauce pool. (It’s even better if it’s garlic bread.) That, plus a big salad: dinner! Now I make meatballs and sauce just because, and in big batches, so I can put some away in the freezer for later. (Never, ever make a single batch of meatballs!) I’ve played the field with different recipes: versions that use only beef (as with Kay Chun’s recipe below), or pork and ricotta. I like great turkey meatballs, too, and I’ve dabbled in meatless meatballs as well.1. Dear Gov. Newsom: Here’s a real California story for you. Ronald Reagan, Frank Sinatra, Phyllis Diller and Bob Hope are immortalized on Palm Springs’ Walk of the Stars — and so is reality TV celebrity Ken Seeley.Ken Seeley of Intervention911 (Photo by Angela Piazza, Orange County Register/SCNG) Seeley gained the national spotlight as a real-life superhero on A&E’s gut-wrenching “Intervention,” sweeping in as users spiral into addiction’s dark depths and often, against all odds, helping yank them out. His star power lent a special sheen to Seeley’s addiction treatment facilities — Ken Seeley Communities or KSC, doing business as Intervention911 — and attracts folks seeking similar miracles. And so it was for Susan Rea of San Juan Capistrano. Despite repeated brushes with death, emergency room ordeals and stints in rehab, her 22-year-old son Dean just couldn’t shake perhaps the most dangerous addiction of all: to fentanyl. As you well know, Gov. Newsom, this synthetic opioid i...Niles: Will the new Six Flags get the details right?

By Anna Bahney | CNNWashington, DC — When Michael Monaghan, a real estate agent with Coldwell Banker Sellers Realty in northern California, got an offer for a home in Bayside at the seller’s $650,000 list price in September, he told the buyer’s agent that the buyer needed to start looking for insurance immediately.“I said, ‘Start working on this on day one,’” Monaghan said. “Getting insurance is the most important thing right now when you’re in escrow for the deal to close.”In the past, acquiring homeowners’ insurance didn’t present buyers much difficulty, but as climate change increases the frequency and severity of extreme weather, insurers — especially those in areas most impacted by floods and fires — are raising their premiums, or pulling out altogether, impacting the affordability and availability of home and fire insurance. For example, in May, State Farm, the largest home insurer in the state, announced it would pause issuing policies in California, citing wildfire risks. WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court is taking up a challenge to a federal law that prohibits people from having guns if they are under a court order to stay away from their spouse, partner or other family members. The justices are hearing arguments Tuesday in their first case about guns since last year’s decision that called into question numerous gun control laws. The federal appeals court in New Orleans struck down the law, intended to protect domestic violence victims, following the Supreme Court’s Bruen decision in June 2022. That high-court ruling not only expanded Americans’ gun rights under the Constitution, but also changed the way courts are supposed to evaluate restrictions on firearms.Justice Clarence Thomas’ opinion for the court tossed out the balancing test judges had long used to decide whether gun laws were constitutional. Rather than consider whether a law enhances public safety, judges should only weigh whether it fits into the nation’s history of ...Latest news
