Opinion: California rollback of marijuana rules won’t help growers

Opinion: California rollback of marijuana rules won’t help growers Legalizing recreational cannabis in California was supposed to bring illegal growers out of the shadows and into a robust, safe and regulated market. When voters approved Proposition 64 in 2016, the measure promised to end the damage to our lands and water that had long been part of the illegal marijuana industry.Instead, while some of the small growers who characterized the illegal business have been licensed, the new market has quickly become dominated by a handful of huge corporate farmers. Hoping to save the small growers from extinction, the California Legislature is considering rolling back some of the very environmental guardrails that were supposed to make the legal industry more sustainable. This is a big mistake. While the intent of proposals like Senate Bill 508, introduced by John Laird, D-Monterey, may be laudable, removing environmental safeguards would set a bad precedent, and it won’t save the beleaguered growers who are struggling to survive in the new market. In fact...

Gene therapy for sickle cell and thalassemia gets approval in the UK, a world first LONDON (AP) — Britain’s medicines regulator has authorized the world’s first gene therapy treatment for sickle cell disease, in a move that could offer relief to thousands of people with the crippling disease in the U.K.In a statement on Thursday, the Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory Agency said it approved Casgevy, the first medicine licensed using the gene editing tool CRISPR, which won its makers a Nobel prize in 2020. The agency approved the treatment for patients with sickle cell disease and thalassemia who are 12 years old and over. Casgevy is made by Vertex Pharmaceuticals (Europe) Ltd. and CRISPR Therapeutics. To date, bone marrow transplants, extremely arduous procedures that come with very unpleasant side effects, have been the only long-lasting treatment. “The future of life-changing cures resides in CRISPR based (gene-editing) technology,” said Dr. Helen O’Neill of University College London. “The use of the word ‘cure’ in relation to sickle cell dise...

South Africa recovers to set Australia 213 to win Cricket World Cup semifinal after Miller’s 101 KOLKATA, India (AP) — South Africa recovered from a bad start to set Australia a target of 213 to win their semifinal match at the Cricket World Cup on Thursday.David Miller struck 101 to help the South Africans rebound from a perilous position at 24-4 in the 12th over and post a respectable 212 all out with two balls remaining in the innings.Heinrich Klaasen scored 47 runs off 48 balls and put on 95 off 113 for the fifth wicket with Miller to rescue the Proteas. The recovery came after Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood took advantage of helpful overhead conditions to rip through the top order, leaving the South Africans struggling after winning the toss and choosing to bat first.Temba Bavuma (0) fell in the first over and a frustrated Quinton De Kock was out for just 3 off 14 balls when he skied Hazlewood to a backpedaling Pat Cummins.Aiden Markram got a thick outside edge off Starc to David Warner for 10 and Rassie van der Dussen (6) edged Hazlewood to Steve Smith at second slip.Th...

Xi-Biden meeting seen as putting rocky relations back on course, though main differences remain TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — Perhaps just shaking hands and sitting down together can be enough sometimes. At their four-hour meeting Wednesday, U.S. President Joe Biden and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping didn’t resolve any of the vital geopolitical issues dividing the world’s two largest economies and chief rivals for global influence, but they struck a conciliatory tone that came as a relief to other countries, especially China’s neighbors. The two leaders met at a northern California country estate, holding talks, lunching and taking a garden stroll designed to show that while the two countries are global competitors, they’re not locked in a winner-take-all faceoff.“Planet Earth is big enough for the two countries to succeed,” Xi told Biden.Biden emphasized the need to avoid miscommunication. “We have to ensure competition does not veer into conflict,” he said. The leaders’ first face-to-face encounter in a year appears to have put a floor under a relat...
