When winter meets spring, it’s time for these vegetarian soups

Published Wed, 26 Feb 2025 18:06:47 GMT

By Melissa Clark, The New York TimesLate last month in Prospect Park, I ran past a patch of purple crocuses practically glowing in the sun. March temperatures may slouch below freezing and snow may blanket the ground, but nothing can stop the lengthening days from enticing shoots from the soil and people’s moods out of their wintry doldrums. It can snow all it wants, but come the thaw those crocuses will still be fresh and upbeat. It’s at this time of year when I like to embrace lighter, more buoyant broths filled with the season’s most vibrant produce — and little, if any, meat. The key to the deepest, richest flavors in any soup is building complexity at every step. These do just that, as well as using the right techniques to bring out the best of winter’s last crop of vegetables. For example, roasting roots before adding them to a soup pot is a classic way to release their flavor. A stint in a hot oven caramelizes their sugars and condenses their essence so they taste even mo...

CU researchers find airborne viral diseases survive longer in dry climates like Colorado’s

Published Wed, 26 Feb 2025 18:06:47 GMT

Colorado’s dry climate is ideal for airborne viruses to survive, according to a new study published in PNAS Nexus by researchers at the University of Colorado Boulder, potentially explaining why people who live in dry climates are more susceptible to such infections. This study, which incorporated a live coronavirus that does not cause COVID-19 rather than bacteria or fungi, showed that airborne viral particles in artificial saliva remain infectious for nearly twice as long in a drier climate than in a humid one.The research was conducted by watching how the virus in artificial saliva reacted to different relative humidity climates. The researchers set the humidity inside a bioaerosol chamber to 60%, 40%, and 25%. At 60% and 40% humidity, the number of virus particles in saliva dropped by half in an hour. At 25%, which is Colorado’s average relative humidity, it took two hours for the number of particles to drop by half.“This study is very relevant to Colorado becau...

Oscars roll out the Champagne-colored carpet

Published Wed, 26 Feb 2025 18:06:47 GMT

When Hollywood's biggest names walk head to the Oscars on Sunday, they'll notice something a little different. The normal red carpet has done a color swap and it's now a Champagne color. On Wednesday, crews rolled out the new color, but it will be still referred to as the red carpet. Oscars host Jimmy Kimmel was on hand to assist with the rollout. He joked that the switch from red to Champagne showed how confident producers are that no blood will be shed this year, following last year's slap involving Will Smith and Chris Rock. This year's ceremony will be the third time Kimmel will have hosted. Days ago he revealed that he is "ready" if another slap were to occur but was choosy as to when he'd intervene. “If somebody comes up on the stage and slaps me? Well, I size them up, and, if I’m bigger than they are, I beat the s— out of them on television. And if it’s the Rock, I run,” he said.KTLA 5's Sam Rubin, Jessica Holmes, Megan Henderson and Doug Kolk will be live on the red carpet s...

New atmospheric river storm barrels toward California

Published Wed, 26 Feb 2025 18:06:47 GMT

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California braced Thursday for the arrival of another atmospheric river that forecasters warned will bring heavy rain, strong winds, thunderstorms and the threat of flooding to a state still digging out from earlier storms. The flood threat will come from the combination of rain and melting of parts of the huge snowpack built in California's mountains by nine atmospheric rivers early in the winter and later storms fueled by a blast of arctic air.The new atmospheric river is a type known as a “Pineapple Express” because it is a deep tap of warm subtropical moisture stretching over the Pacific to Hawaii. Its greatest impacts were expected in northern and central California. The snowpack at high elevations is so massive it should be able absorb the rain, forecasters said. But elevations below 4,000 feet (1,219 meters) will see melting and runoff. The National Weather Service characterized the flood threat as “moderate.”At high elevations the storm was predicted ...

Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome: What Is CHS and Can It Kill You?

Published Wed, 26 Feb 2025 18:06:47 GMT

These days, whenever we hear the word “cannabis,” the majority of what we associate it with is its wonderful cures. While most of the benefits of marijuana may be true, one can still experience side effects — BUT, that’s the case with almost everything a human body takes in. One side effect of weed, however, may be far from possibly killing a person, but when someone goes through this syndrome, it isn’t necessarily a pleasant experience — and that ailment is CHS. If you’re wondering, “What is CHS?” — it’s not a new strain! But rather a (relatively) newly observed side effect of marijuana. Here are things you might want to know about CHS.What Is CHS and What Are the Signs and Symptoms?CHS or Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome is one of the side effects of long-term marijuana use. It’s International Women’s Day Every Day at this Los Angeles Gallery

Gallerist, curator, consultant, and pillar of progressive platforming Annie Wharton started Ladies’ Room — the Los Angeles-based contemporary art gallery where it’s always Women’s History Month — five years ago, but her vision has never been timelier.“Working in the visual arts for more than 20 years, I have seen firsthand how women and nonbinary artists are not being exhibited, collected, researched or written about like their male counterparts,” Wharton tells the L.A. Weekly. “I have conducted over 4,000 studio visits with artists in Los Angeles, a city rich with artistic talent, yet lacking in opportunities for women and nonbinary artists.” In December 2018, Wharton opened Ladies’ Room to provide a platform to help counter this disparity.Becca Van K: Drexcyen Star Chamber (Drexciya), 2014, Embroidery floss, canvas mesh, pine, and hardware 18.5 x 18.5 x 2 in (in WORK at LADIES’ ROOM)Ladies’ Room operates out of a small space in downtown’s historic Bendix Building — a hub of ...
