Azerbaijan installs checkpoint on road to Nagorno-Karabakh amid fatal clashes Azerbaijan has set up a checkpoint on the only road in or out of the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh, sparking fears for its ethnic Armenian population and reports of new firefights along the shared border. In a statement issued on Sunday, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry said that work had begun to “establish control” along the Lachin corridor, the sole highway that links the breakaway territory to Armenia.According to officials, the move is intended to stop “the rotation of personnel of Armenian armed forces that continue to be illegally stationed in the territory of Azerbaijan, the transfer of weapons and ammunition, entrance of terrorists, as well as illicit trafficking of natural resources.”Following a war between the two sides over Nagorno-Karabakh in 2020, the Lachin corridor has been under the jurisdiction of Russian peacekeeping forces as part of a Moscow-backed ceasefire agreement. Orioles get 6th straight win, beating Tigers 2-1, on walk-off wild pitch after duel of team’s former top prospects Sunday’s afternoon game at Camden Yards was a matchup of what could have been and what is. Two pitchers who share a last name, one whose days in an Oriole uniform never came and another for whom they are only beginning, dueled in a crowded Baltimore venue older than either of them. But neither Orioles rookie right-hander Grayson Rodriguez nor former Baltimore prospect Eduardo Rodriguez were around when the home team secured its sixth straight win. Adam Frazier rushed home on a wild pitch in the bottom of the 10th to give the Orioles a 2-1 victory over the Detroit Tigers, completing a series sweep.“Those kind of wins, at the end of each season, they add up,” said Fraizer, whose fielder’s choice Friday gave Baltimore a walk-off win in the series opener. “That’s how you make the playoffs.”The Orioles (14-7) have tied their third-best start in franchise history, trailing only the 1966 team (16-5) that won the World Series and the 1968 group (15-6...

Yoshida goes deep twice, Red Sox score nine in eighth to beat Brewers 12-5 It seemed like it was going to be another one of those frustrating days. The Red Sox squandered a few early scoring chances, let the Brewers hang around, and eventually gave up the lead after Kaleb Ort walked three in the seventh and allowed the go-ahead run to score on a wild pitch. Given how good Milwaukee’s bullpen has been you’d have been forgiven for flipping over to the Bruins game, because clearly this one was over.If that was you Sunday, well, you missed a lot.Justin Turner and Masataka Yoshida wasted no time flipping the script, hitting back-to-back home runs in the top of the eighth to tie the game and take the lead. That sparked what wound up being a nine-run rally, as the Red Sox sent 12 runners to the plate and Yoshida delivered the dagger with a towering grand slam his second time up.That was more than enough breathing room for the bullpen, who closed out the 12-5 win to clinch Boston’s third straight series win, it’s second against a first-place...

Massachusetts tax cut plan author explains reasoning behind proposed change to rebate law The state Legislature’s chief budget writer is defending a decision by lawmakers to pass changes to a tax rebate law, which last year sent $3 billion back to taxpayers.“We saw during the pandemic, when our low income workers — a lot of our low income workers, a lot of our front line workers — were out there working day in and day out, could not stay home and do remote work and had to go out there on the front lines,” state House Ways and Means Chair Aaron Michlewitz said on Sunday.“They were the ones that helped carry this economy and keep our economy strong in those difficult times,” he continued. The North End Democrat was speaking with WCVB’s Sharman Sacchetti and Ed Harding for their Sunday politics show On the Record. Those low-income workers who kept the state going through the COVID-19 pandemic are deserving of benefits when the economy they buoy does well enough, he said, and the state must send money back to taxpayers. That’s what happened last summer, when lawmakers were see...

Mets’ lesson learned during West Coast trip: You can never have enough pitching SAN FRANCISCO — The West Coast trips have historically been tough for the Mets, but they handled the one they’re about to end with relative ease. Despite setbacks like more pitching injuries, a suspension for Max Scherzer and the question of what to do with Eduardo Escobar at third base, the Mets will finish with a winning record after 10 games against the Oakland A’s, the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Francisco Giants. We learned a lot about the Mets and the three teams they faced. The A’s are in a bad spot, with the owner seemingly trying to play out the plot of “Major League” in real life, but a sweep in Oakland last weekend gave the Mets some momentum against the Los Angeles Dodgers, who provided a tough, early-season test. The only game the Mets lost in Los Angeles was a game in which a future Hall of Fame pitcher, left-hander Clayton Kershaw, authored a masterpiece characteristic of his entire career. The Giants lost out on Aaron Judge, Bran...
