SAN FRANCISCO — If you want to know what made Bob Myers such a great shepherd for the Golden State Warriors organization over the last decade-plus, note where he first choked up in his farewell press conference Tuesday. It wasn’t talking about the titles, the players, or his peers in the front office. No, it was when he was talking about Warriors fans.Professional sports are filled with mercenaries — you go where you’re drafted, traded, or where the money is.But never forget that Myers turned down big money as a superagent and followed his dream to the Warriors, his childhood team.Returning the Dubs to prominence was the goal. To create an era of dominance was overwhelming in the best possible way. Those emotions broke through Tuesday.“To feel like I had helped give this fan base and this community [joy],” Myer said “I’m so thankful.”That level of care was evident throughout the years — amid all the ups and downs.“Thank you for your supp...Opinion: Medicare creating unprecedented barriers to Alzheimer’s treatment

Just months after my diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) due to Alzheimer’s at age 56, I found myself standing in front of my classroom of college freshmen, unable to talk to my students. An abrupt, early retirement followed. Now I, along with millions of others living with early-stage Alzheimer’s disease, am fighting for more time.Imagine you are me.Imagine knowing while one U.S. government agency, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), has approved a treatment for this devastating disease that another agency, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is keeping that treatment out of reach for patients who don’t have the financial means to pay the estimated annual cost of $26,500 out of pocket. That’s the harsh reality Alzheimer’s patients like me face every day.In January, the Alzheimer’s community rejoiced — a second treatment, Leqembi, which slows Alzheimer’s progression when taken in the early stages, received FDA approval under the FDA’s acce...2 dead, 1 injured in Highway 1 crash on Peninsula

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) — The tradition of hockey’s playoff beard goes back to at least the mid-1980s, with the Detroit Red Wings widely credited with beginning the facial hair phenomenon. The playoff beard rub might have started last month by accident.Go back to April 26, when the Florida Panthers staved off elimination by beating the Boston Bruins in overtime of Game 5 of the first-round series. Overjoyed in the moment, Panthers teammates Marc Staal and Aaron Ekblad gave each other a big hug on the bench. Completely normal stuff. Here’s the unusual part: As they embraced, they realized their beards were rubbing up against the other. And since it worked that night, it’s become a celebratory routine for Staal and Ekblad.“Yeah, it’s a unique one, for sure,” Staal said.Whatever works. (CNN) — Remove your shoes. Take your keys out of your pocket. Step on the scale? That’s right: New Zealand’s Civil Aviation Authority is asking that its national airline weigh passengers departing on international flights from Auckland International Airport through July 2, 2023.The program, which Air New Zealand calls a passenger weight survey, is a way to gather data on the weight load and distribution for planes, the airline said.“We weigh everything that goes on the aircraft – from the cargo to the meals onboard, to the luggage in the hold,” Alastair James, the airline’s load control improvement specialist said in a statement. “For customers, crew and cabin bags, we use average weights, which we get from doing this survey.”Still, weight is a personal thing that not everyone wishes to disclose. In order to protect individuals’ privacy, the airline says it has made the data anonymous.Travelers will be asked to stand on a digital scale when they check-in for their flight. ...Latest news
