Kenyan runner Faith Kipyegon is focused on defending her 1,500 world title in a record-breaking year BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — The first world record, Faith Kipyegon pointed at her time in disbelief. The second, she covered her mouth in astonishment. The third, just a quick point toward the clock and a look of pure satisfaction. No doubt, the decorated Kenyan runner has had plenty of practice perfecting her record-breaking reactions this year.Over a 50-day stretch, the 29-year-old Kipyegon — who began her international career running barefoot — made toppling records look like a walk in the park as she erased top marks in the 1,500 meters (3 minutes, 49.11 seconds on June 2), 5,000 (14:05.20 on June 9), and the mile (4:07.64 on July 21).She’s altering her focus this week at the world championships, focusing more on medals (but never discount records falling with her in a race). The two-time Olympic champion will defend her 1,500 world title in Budapest, while also incorporating another event, the 5,000, into her repertoire. If all goes well, it could be a double she attempts at next y...

Biden to visit fire-ravaged Maui on Monday as search efforts continue (CNN) — President Joe Biden will journey Monday to fire-ravaged Maui to witness up close the devastation left by an inferno more than a week ago and assess for himself a government response that some residents initially found lacking.Monday’s trip will bring Biden to the scene of the deadliest American wildfire in more than 100 years. His initial response to the Maui wildfires drew criticism earlier this month, mainly from Republicans, who seized upon a lengthy period of public silence from the White House as the death toll rose. With hundreds of people still unaccounted for, the death toll is still expected to rise, as emergency responders and cadaver dogs search through the incinerated wasteland for victims. Biden is planning to name a senior federal emergency official to oversee long-term recovery efforts during his visit. The trip will provide Biden an opportunity to demonstrate in-person compassion for a community shaken by the disaster, and to dispel some of the early backlash a...

Equality Minister Irene Montero, from the left-wing Podemos party, said: “Let’s not take it for granted that kissing without consent is something that ‘happens.’ It is a form of sexual violence that we women suffer on a daily basis and until now invisible, and that we cannot normalize. Summery Start

Published Fri, 15 Nov 2024 07:43:28 GMT

Summery Start What a day we had for ourselves yesterday as sunshine won out, and temps topped off in the low to mid 80s with the humidity in check. With so many unsettled days this summer, it was great to sneak in a fantastic pool/beach day over the weekend. Can we do it again today? Sort of. The temps run back into the mid to even a few upper 80s, so no doubt it’ll be warm. It’ll be more humid too with dew points sliding back into the mid 60s. We’ll have more clouds today, filtering and fading the sun at times and after 3pm, it’s fair game for a few isolated to scattered showers/rumble of thunder to pop up too. About 30% of us will pick up a shower/storm, and most of them will be brief. That means if you’re planning that pool or beach day, most of the day turns out dry, get keep an eye out for that possible brief interruption late afternoon. Those scattered showers/storm will be ahead of a cold front that slips through overnight tonight. On the other side of that f...
