BOSTON (AP) — Chris Sale’s first start after 10 weeks on the injured list had extra meaning for him.It might mean even more for the Red Sox.Sale retired Detroit’s first 14 batters on Friday night, combining with two relievers on a two-hitter to lead the Red Sox past the Tigers 5-2. The win was Boston’s third in a row, helping the Red Sox pull within three games of the Toronto Blue Jays in the race for the AL’s final wild card spot.“Any time you’re playing for something, it’s obviously much more enjoyable and more intense,” said Sale, who struck out seven before leaving to a standing ovation. “This is going to bring a boost to the clubhouse, and hopefully we can hold it down and make a push and start playing some games in October.”Sale took a perfect game into the fifth, striking out Jake Rogers to lead off the inning and then getting Miguel Cabrera on a grounder. But Kerry Carpenter followed with a home run over the Red Sox bullpen, and when Sale hit the next...

Why are movie theater snacks so expensive?

Published Wed, 26 Feb 2025 20:44:19 GMT

(NEXSTAR) - Whether you’re going to the movies to love, cry, or care, as Nicole Kidman once said in her now-iconic advertising campaign, there’s a pretty good chance you’re also going for the popcorn and candy. The price tag on your snacks may make you cry, though. It’s a common gripe about movie theaters – the food and drinks are expensive. Take a box of Dots at Marcus Theatres, for example. They’re listed at $4.99 on the chain’s online ordering system. A box of Cookie Dough Bites at an AMC Theatres location in Chicago sells for $5.69 if you order online. The same boxes of either candy are listed as $1.24 at Walmart. A popcorn will run you anywhere between $7.65 and $10.29 between the two theaters. Meanwhile, you can buy a box of six bags of AMC Theatres branded microwave popcorn for less than $5 at Walmart.  Stuck at a red light? You may need to let it know you’re there So why do movie theater concessions cost you so much? There are a number of factors t...

Lowest-paying jobs in St. Louis

Published Wed, 26 Feb 2025 20:44:19 GMT

The U.S. may be one of the wealthiest countries in the world, but financial inequality prevails within its borders. That divide is growing, especially between the poorest and richest U.S. residents. The middle class is shrinking. In 2021, just half of adults lived in a middle-income household, a huge drop from 61% in the 70s. This dip meant some middle-class adults broke into the high-income bracket. At the same time, the share of lower-income residents is growing: 29% of adults lived in low-income households in 2021, compared to 25% in 1971.Wages over this period grew at all income levels, but the rich got significantly higher bumps. Pew Charitable Trusts found that high incomes grew 69% over the past 50 years, while low incomes grew just 45%. The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated and further exposed these harsh financial gaps. The difference in pay for the highest- and lowest-paying jobs in the U.S. last year was over eightfold: from about $28,000 for entertainment attendants to over $2...

Survivors of the deadly Maui wildfires start returning to ruins. The death toll is likely to rise

LAHAINA, Hawaii (AP) — Dogs trained to find bodies sniffed through piles of rubble and ash as stunned survivors of deadly wildfires that claimed at least 80 lives on the Hawaiian island of Maui took stock of their shattered lives and tried to imagine rebuilding from nothing. The only items Summer and Gilles Gerling were able to retrieve from the detritus-filled lot where their home once stood in Lahaina were a piggy bank Summer's father gave her as a child, their daughter’s jade bracelet and watches they gifted each other for their wedding. Their wedding rings were gone.“Safety was the main concern. These are all material things,” Gilles Gerling said. The fires nearly wiped out the historic town of 13,000 people and were still not fully contained Friday night on some parts of the island. Maui County raised the number of confirmed deaths to 80 Friday night, and Gov. Josh Green warned that the toll would likely rise as search and rescue operations continue.
