Minnesota added 7,700 new jobs in May and the unemployment rate rose 0.1 percentage point to 2.9%, the state reported Thursday. The rise in the unemployment rate came because the state saw its labor force grow in May, with 8,700 workers entering the job market — the largest over-the-month labor force gain since June 2020, the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development said in a news release.Minnesota’s labor force participation rate rose 0.1% percentage point to 68.2%. The labor force is comprised of those in the state who are working full-time or who are actively seeking work, and is used to calculate the main unemployment rate.“A growing labor force is the latest sign of strength for Minnesota’s economy,” said temporary DEED Commissioner Kevin McKinnon said in the release. “Employers constantly tell us that they need more workers to fill their open roles. Now, we’ve seen back-to-back months during which more workers are pursuing jobs around the state. This is...

Republican states arm teachers, fortify buildings in another year of school shootings

Published Wed, 26 Feb 2025 14:32:46 GMT

Matt Vasilogambros and Madyson Fitzgerald | Stateline.org (TNS)As another school year defined by mass shootings ends in America, Republican-led state legislatures passed measures this session to fortify schools, create guidelines for active shooter drills and safety officer responses, and allow teachers to be armed.Firearm restrictions, however, were a nonstarter in red states trying to curb school shootings. The legislation pushed by GOP lawmakers in states such as Georgia, Iowa, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas and Utah this year often ran contrary to the advice of gun safety advocates and national education experts, who remain concerned that having more guns in schools only further endangers children and educators. But the Republican lawmakers interviewed by Stateline say the solution to preventing school shootings is not banning certain weapons or taking away guns from potentially dangerous people, but rather empowering schools to more quickly resp...

After promising but hamstrung rookie season, Broncos TE Greg Dulcich aiming for flexibility on the field and off

The key word for Greg Dulcich’s first full offseason as an NFL player: Flexibility.Sure, it’d be great if the tight end adds it to his game on the field in Year 2 for the Broncos by becoming a better blocker and continuing to develop his promising pass-catching skill set, but positional flexibility is secondary in importance at the moment.Dulcich quite literally spent the offseason trying to become more flexible in an effort to stave off the recurring hamstring issues that limited him during his rookie season.“That’s definitely been a huge part of my offseason since January, just making sure I can be more flexible to try to limit injuries and try to get into a better routine to make sure my body is all good,” he told reporters Thursday.Dulcich made an impression right away last year after arriving in Denver as a third-round draft pick out of UCLA, but he suffered a hamstring injury in OTAs. Not only did he miss minicamp, but he also missed training camp. Then he was placed on ...

Coloradans challenging COVID vaccine mandates see tepid results from courts even as legal landscape shifts

Published Wed, 26 Feb 2025 14:32:46 GMT

Coloradans who brought legal challenges to employers’ COVID-19 vaccine mandates have received a tepid response in state courts even as the wider legal landscape starts to shift to become more friendly toward claims that the right to religious freedom should protect people against mandatory vaccination, The Denver Post found.Such constitutional challenges to vaccine mandates have long been dismissed by courts — the U.S. Supreme Court first upheld vaccine mandates in 1905 — but recent moves by the justices to strengthen religious freedom in other contexts have begun a shift away from that long-held precedent, legal experts told The Post.“If you had written the textbook on public health law three or four years ago, what it would have said about (these) challenges is — not very likely to succeed,” said Daniel Goldberg, associate professor at the University of Colorado’s Anschutz Medical Campus. “…The textbooks are being rewritten as ...
