AUSTIN (KXAN) -- An active stretch of weather will begin today and continue through Friday. Below is a day-by-day breakdown of storm potential & risks:TODAY (WED): Mainly cloudy skies can be expected through most of the day with a few sprinkles in the mix. A low risk for an isolated strong to severe storms is possible in the far western Hill Country late day as a dryline further west triggers storm development. Low confidence exists in storms (1) forming & (2) holding together long enough to reach the Hill Country, but if they do, large hail will be the primary concern.Low risk (1 out of 5) for strong to severe storms Wednesday afternoon & eveningTHURSDAY: A slow-moving cold front tied to a strong storm system further north will be the main driver of storm development in our area Thursday. Scattered storms and showers are looking likely for a large portion of our area. There is a 1 out of 5 risk for isolated severe storms in the far west and south with an elevated 2 out ...Nico Perrino: College campus hecklers, your disruptions don’t count as free speech
Published Fri, 15 Nov 2024 09:50:47 GMT
America is experiencing two disturbing simultaneous trends: the rise of mob censorship to shut down speaking events on college campuses, and an attempt to justify it as merely the exercise of “more speech.”At SUNY Albany this month, protesters stormed an event, formed an improvised conga line and prevented a lecture — ironically, titled “Free Speech on Campus” — from beginning. In a now notorious incident at Stanford Law School last month, protesters shouted down a federal appellate judge’s speech. And in November, hecklers drowned out conservative commentator Ann Coulter at Cornell, playing loud music, chanting, shouting at her and repeatedly preventing her from speaking. “We don’t want you here, your words are violence,” screamed one heckler.I have defended free speech on college campuses for over a decade. We’ve seen waves of shout-downs before. But few defended the disruptions. In fact, they were usually met with ne...Ask Amy: Conversations about Down syndrome feel awkward

Dear Amy: Our family has/had three members with Down syndrome; my youngest sister was born with DS in 1968, and passed away in 2016.I have a cousin with the condition, and my daughter and her husband have a son (our grandson) with Down syndrome.I’ve been involved in the Down syndrome community for many years. I have a teaching degree in special education and was a special education educator for years.Even with a greater socially open acceptance, I still experience social awkwardness when the topic of DS comes up.Although I am perfectly comfortable chatting with others about Down syndrome, I don’t know how to handle situations when others are uncomfortable. When meeting someone for the first time, if I mention that we have a grandson with DS, the other person often looks like a “deer caught in the headlights.”They don’t know how to respond, and the conversation quickly becomes awkward and uncomfortable.I could choose not to say anything in the first place, but ...Horoscopes April 19, 2023: James Franco, assess your situation

Here’s a head-scratching memo from a real-life project manager:“Success depends on teamwork. Teamwork is a lot of people doing what I say.”Winning defense is a joint effort. In today’s deal, West led the queen of hearts against three spades. East signaled with the eight, and South ducked and won the next heart. He led the queen of diamonds, and West took the ace and led the king of clubs: four, three, deuce. He led another diamond, and South won and let the jack of trumps ride.HIGH DIAMONDWest took the king and led a third diamond, and South played low from dummy. He drew trumps, then threw a club on dummy’s remaining high diamond. Making three.East let his partner down. He can beat the contract if he overtakes West’s queen of hearts at Trick One. If South wins and leads the queen of diamonds, West wins and leads the king of clubs, ducked. Then West can lead a low heart to East’s ten for a club return, setting up five tricks for the defense.DAILY ...Word Game: April 19, 2023

Last week, federal officials arrested Jack Teixeira, a 21-year-old airman in the Massachusetts Air National Guard, accusing him of having leaked hundreds of pages of classified Pentagon documents on a Discord server. The documents offer rare insights into the war in Ukraine and the extent of military casualties and reveal the presence of U.S. and other NATO nations’ special forces clandestinely operating in the war zone. They also document how the conflict is spilling over into the Middle East and shed light on U.S. penetration of Russian military plans and U.S. spy efforts, including against American allies and the United Nations secretary general. This week on Intercepted, Jeremy Scahill, Murtaza Hussain, and national security editor Vanessa Gezari discuss the document leak and analyze what we know and don’t know about the young airman accused of distributing the documents, initially to a small group of gamers and gun enthusiasts in a private internet chatroom. They also dis...New UN report shows India on track to become world’s most populous country by mid-year, overtaking China

BERLIN (AP) — A German labor union is calling for railway workers to stage an eight-hour strike on Friday to back calls for an inflation-busting pay raise. Walkouts are also scheduled at three airports this week in a parallel pay dispute. The EVG rail workers’ union called for members to walk off the job from 3 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Friday. It said Wednesday that it had “to increase pressure on employers, who think that they can ignore the demands of their workforce and conduct wage negotiations in a patronizing way.”EVG’s walkout will affect around 50 companies that provide rail services — including the main operator, state-owned Deutsche Bahn.Deutsche Bahn personnel chief Martin Seiler described the strike as “completely pointless and unnecessary” and claimed that EVG’s aim was to score points in a bitter long-term rivalry with the other main railway workers’ union, GDL, which is not involved in the current pay dispute. Deutsche Bahn said it expected Friday...1 city, 2 people — and India’s widening religious divide

AYODHYA, India (AP) — Syed Mohammad Munir Abidi says India is a changed country, one he doesn’t recognize anymore. It’s a country, the 68-year-old says, where Muslims are ignored, where rising attacks against them are encouraged, and where an emboldened Hindu majoritarian government is seizing its chance to put the minority community in its place.Swami Ram Das thinks otherwise, echoing a belief system central to Hindu nationalism. The 48-year-old Hindu priest says India is on a quest to redeem its religious past and that the country is fundamentally a Hindu nation where minorities, especially Muslims, must subscribe to Hindu primacy.Abidi and Das are two ordinary citizens living in one city in a country of more than 1.4 billion people that is on the cusp of becoming the world’s most populated nation. Together they embody the opposing sides of a deeply entrenched religious divide that presents India with one of its biggest challenges: to safeguard freedoms for its Muslim minority at a ...Latest news
