Gaskin: Project recognizes Black women who shaped Boston

Gaskin: Project recognizes Black women who shaped Boston At a time when some leaders are questioning the legitimacy of Black studies and denigrating lessons about Black history or racism as “woke” or as “Critical Race Theory” — terms that white supremacists have twisted to make them sound bad — we did something different. We celebrate 212 of Boston’s most admired, beloved, and successful Black Women leaders who were responsible for shaping Boston through their work in arts and culture, legislation, health, education, community building, and raising a generation of leaders, thereby improving the quality of life for everyone in the city. When it comes to Boston, people are aware of the Irish, Italian, and Brahmin influences. But many are not aware of the collective and cumulative impact Black women have had over the last 300 years. The Black Women Lead (BWL) project helps fill this knowledge gap by recognizing Black women leaders who made their marks on Boston from the 1700s through the present day. They include abolitionists, suffragists, U...

Lowry: U.S. needs to focus on making weapons

Lowry: U.S. needs to focus on making weapons No matter how much we’d like to believe in the inevitably of human progress and the spread of enlightened norms, we’ve learned the past couple of years that we still need artillery shells — lots of artillery shells. The Hamas terror attack, together with the ongoing Ukraine war and the looming Chinese threat to Taiwan, is putting a spotlight on the pitiful state of our capacity to manufacture the weapons necessary to the defense of our allies and ourselves.According to a CNN report, an Israel ground invasion of Gaza would “create a new and entirely unexpected demand for 155 mm artillery ammunition and other weapons at a time when the U.S. and its allies and partners have been stretched thin from more than 18 months of fighting in Ukraine.”We are learning to our regret that we are using an attenuated post-Cold War, “end of history” defense-industrial base to try to meet the security needs of a newly threatening international environment with t...

Editorial: The world must support Israel’s war on terror

Published Fri, 15 Nov 2024 06:00:05 GMT

Editorial: The world must support Israel’s war on terror The images from Israel have been horrific. Almost exactly 50 years after the Yom Kippur War, Israeli forces again appear to have been taken by surprise by their enemies. Attacks by Hamas terrorists left at least 1,300 Israelis dead and thousands wounded, many of them civilians. Dozens more are missing or have been taken hostage. Fighting and rocket attacks rage across the country. Israel, as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared, is at war. This murderous Palestinian assault deserves only one response from the world: outrage, and unwavering support for Israel’s right to defend itself. U.S. President Joe Biden has rightly pledged to stand with Israel “full stop,” as has the European Union. Even as Israel takes the necessary military actions to protect its citizens, all parties in the region need to work to restore some semblance of stability and avoid a broader conflict. An Israeli invasion of Gaza to rescue Israeli captives and reassert control over the territory could last month...

Rising star to watch: Rachel Bobbitt When Canadian songwriter Rachel Bobbitt was 12, she chanced to discover the music of Leonard Cohen. And that moment, now a good ten years ago, proved to be a pivotal one.“He was the first artist that made me say, ‘I didn’t know we were allowed to say things like that, that you could use the English language this way’,” she recalls. “It felt really special because my parents didn’t listen to him and I didn’t have any friends who did. And I felt really smart because he expects so much of his audience — and also the fact that he was Canadian just seemed crazy to me. I must have spent that whole day going over his Wikipedia page.”Recently signed to the Fantasy label, Bobbitt makes a return to the Boston area at Deep Cuts Monday evening, on a bill with Will Butler. It’s her second visit this fall, following a show at the Crystal Ballroom last month.During her teen years Bobbitt earned some online fame by posting a long string of cover songs on the now-defunct social media platform ...
